November 2024: Vote for Jen Nossokoff for D1 Supervisor

The San Francisco League of Conservation Voters endorses Jen Nossokoff for District 1 Supervisor based on her priorities to improve transit, increase housing development, and enhance parks.

SFMTA faces a looming budget shortfall, which threatens Muni’s future. To help restore Muni’s fiscal health, Nossokoff supports the Community Transit Act, which would fund Muni by taxing ride-share services and extending parking meter hours. Nossokoff recognizes that these revenues, if established, are not a complete solution to Muni’s budget challenges and seeks additional funding avenues such as advocating for additional state support, adjusting the City’s budget to prioritize transit, and getting creative on selling more advertising space on buses. Supporting this kind of multi-pronged funding portfolio would help ensure Muni has a balanced budget.

In addition to prioritizing Muni’s funding, Nossokoff supports policies designed to promote bus reliability. These policies include the Geary Improvement Project, giving buses priority at intersections, and dedicated bus lanes, for example on Fulton, California, and Balboa streets. Bringing these transit-friendly measures to District 1 will help reduce reliance on cars and contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system in District 1.

District 1 residents have frequently opposed efforts to increase housing density. Yet the neighborhood will have to do its part if the city is going to meet its housing requirements to build 82,000 new homes across all price points by 2030. As a step towards meeting this need and increasing housing development in District 1, Nossokoff supports upzoning in specific areas of the district, including the Geary Boulevard and Fulton, Clement, and Balboa Street corridors, for higher-density mixed-use developments near transit routes.

Bringing new housing to District 1 will not be an easy task with residents in the district expressing “alarm” over higher story buildings and increased density. Whoever serves as supervisor for this district will need to ensure that constituents are heard while advancing much-needed development on the city’s west side. Nossokoff did not shy away from the possibility of these tough conversations. She expressed enthusiasm for engaging with the community and helping residents and business owners re-envision taller and infill developments as avenues to vibrant neighborhoods and bustling business corridors.

Nossokoff supports park enhancements for District 1 and citywide, pointing out that parks and community gardens can reduce crime, improve safety, and foster a sense of community.

Nossokoff opposed Prop I (November 2022), which would have allowed cars on the JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park and the Great Highway/Walkway, and she supports closing the Great Highway to cars and making it a permanent park. She also supports expanded and new slow streets in the district as safe corridors for both cyclists and pedestrians, envisioning an integrated approach that creates linked biking and walking routes to promote livability and reduce driving.

Nossokoff’s transit, housing, and parks priorities are well-aligned with SFLCV. Vote Jen Nossokoff for D1!
