March 2024: Democratic County Central Committee Endorsements

While there are many qualified candidates & several noted political figures, SFLCV endorsed on the basis of the candidates' answers to our questionnaire and their record on environmental issues. We took into consideration that some candidates are not eligible to advocate on city issues due to current or former roles in city government. All candidate questionnaires are available on our endorsements page. We did not consider candidates who did not return questionnaires. Jump to AD 19.

AD 17 Endorsed Candidates

Lai, Michael - Endorsed - Lai scored well on the questionnaire and did not oppose the SFLCV position on any topics. While he declined to sign up in support of the Great Highway Park, an SFLCV priority, we endorse him due to his support for our other priorities.

Mahmood, Bilal - Endorsed - Mahmood scored well on the questionnaire and did not oppose the SFLCV position on any topics. Although he declined to answer the parking meters-related question, we chose to endorse him due to his support for all of our other policy priorities.

AD 17 Candidates Not Endorsed

As a DCCC member, Berry voted against the SFLCV position on 2022’s Propositions D & E (Housing), I (Great Highway and JFK), J (Car Free JFK), and 2024’s Proposition C (the transfer tax for downtown office conversions).

Gallotta, Peter - Gallotta disagreed with the SFLCV position on 4 of the 11 questions on the questionnaire and declined to respond to 2 other questions. Barz, Sara - Endorsed - Barz agreed with the SFLCV position on every question on the questionnaire. Barz is a leading sustainable transportation activist in San Francisco, a leader at KidSafe SF and a co-founder of Seamless Bay Area.

Calamuci, Dan - Endorsed - Calamuci agreed with the SFLCV position on every question on the questionnaire. Calamuci is a member of the energy team within the Carpenters Union, working to expand renewable resources throughout the State.

Chen, Mike - Endorsed - Mike Chen (we include his first name since there are two Chens in the race) scored well on the questionnaire and did not oppose the SFLCV position on any topics. As a community organizer, Mike has experience with the details of multiple environmental issues in San Francisco.

Nossokoff, Jen - Endorsed - Nossokoff scored well on the questionnaire. A relatively new candidate, Nossokoff was motivated to get more involved after joining the efforts to create the JFK Promenade in 2022. She published a piece in the Richmond Review about her support for the Geary Improvement Project and gave in-person public comment in support of moving the project forward. Public transit and safer streets are top priorities for SFLCV, and they are also top priorities for Nossokoff.

Quan, Brian - Endorsed - Quan scored well on the questionnaire. He was recently elected to the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club’s San Francisco Bay Chapter and is a past President of the Chinese American Democratic Club. He has particular interests in sustainable transportation, housing, and seaweed farming

AD 19 Candidates Not Endorsed

Gee, Natalie - Gee disagreed with the SFLCV position on 7 of the 11 questions on the questionnaire.

Gupta, Parag - Gupta did not score well on the questionnaire.

Hardeman, Greg - Hardeman disagreed with the SFLCV position on 5 of the 11 questions on the questionnaire and declined to respond to 1 other question.

Hsieh, Frances - Hsieh disagreed with the SFLCV position on 10 of the 11 questions, earning the lowest score and showing the least alignment with SFLCV of any DCCC candidate.

Kelly, Hene - Kelly did not score well on the questionnaire.

Mar, Gordon - Former Supervisor Mar scored well on the questionnaire.

As a Supervisor, Mar voted to support Proposition J (Car Free JFK). As a DCCC member, Mar voted with the SFLCV position to endorse several Supervisor candidates, and he supported the SFLCV position on 2022’s Propositions D (Affordable Homes Now), I (Great Highway and JFK) and J (Car Free JFK).

However, as a Supervisor, Mar also took many actions we disagree with. He wrote to SFMTA asking them to eliminate all of the slow streets in the Sunset, which they did the very next day. He asked SFMTA to reopen the Great Highway to cars; this intervention is a significant reason why we now have four lanes of cut-through traffic on weekdays instead of an oceanside park. He argued for delaying and reducing the size of a 100% affordable apartment building on Irving Street. He was also the only supervisor to vote against the Balboa Reservoir project, a large residential project next to City College that will have 50% affordable housing, including some units reserved for City College and SFUSD staff.

As a DCCC member, he voted against the SFLCV position on the endorsement of 2022’s Proposition E (Affordable Housing Production Act) and 2024’s Proposition C (the transfer tax for downtown office conversions). Additionally, for the upcoming March 2024 election, Mar has endorsed 24 candidates for SF DCCC of which SFLCV has voted only to endorse only one.

Ultimately, Mar’s opposition to the Sunset’s slow streets, his advocacy to return cars to the Great Highway Park, his housing opposition votes, and his recent candidate and ballot measure endorsements represented too much opposition to SFLCV positions to warrant an endorsement.
