November 2020: Vote Connie Chan for a More Affordable, Walkable, and Bikeable District 1!
/The San Francisco League of Conservation Voters endorses Connie Chan for District 1 Supervisor.
Connie Chan displays a commitment to bringing affordable housing and safe, walkable, and bikeable streets as District 1 Supervisor.
District 1, which covers the Richmond and most of Golden Gate Park, faces many of the same social and environmental challenges as neighborhoods across our city: a lack of affordable housing and the related displacement, and the need for safe, reliable transit beyond cars. Somewhat uniquely, District 1 will need to grapple with the impacts of a long history of racially discriminatory exclusionary zoning, e.g., historical bans on multifamily housing, that are still influencing the makeup and diversity of District 1 today, to overcome these challenges.
We endorse Chan because she recognizes that public transit, as well as walkable and bikeable streets, are linchpins of environmentally sound urbanism. In her interview with the League, Chan confirmed she would support exploring the use of congestion pricing to incentivize increased use of public transit and to create new revenue for MUNI, which has been financially decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The SFLCV values Chan’s receptiveness to new transit solutions, and encourages her to have open lines of communication with MUNI and work constructively with the agency, if elected as District 1 Supervisor.
Chan also identified that District 1 must produce 100% affordable housing, not only to serve the people of District 1, but also to carry the neighborhood’s “fair share of the load” for the city at-large. Chan explained that she will be an advocate for affordable housing for low- and middle-income families, as well as approaches that leverage transit-rich corridors like those along Geary Boulevard. In her words, “It’s about what [housing] we’re building for who.” This is why, for example, Chan supported Prop E’s approach for affordable housing for the City’s working families and teachers.
Chan’s environmentalism extends to expanding the reach of CleanPowerSF, the City’s independence from PG&E, and localized stormwater management solutions installed on commercial and residential properties. Running to serve her neighborhood of nearly a decade, Chan has a strong policy and public service background as an aide for former Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris, and Supervisor Aaron Peskin.
We’re hopeful that, if elected, Chan will translate her laudable campaign positions into actions, and become a champion for solutions to District 1’s intersecting housing, transit, and sustainability challenges.
