November 2020: Myrna Melgar is a Strong Voice for District 7 and the Environment!
/The San Francisco League of Conservation Voters endorses Myrna Melgar for District 7 Supervisor.
As in much of San Francisco, the biggest environmental issues in District 7 are transit and housing, especially affordable housing. According to the City’s Affordable Housing Pipeline dashboard, outside of Park Merced, only one unit of affordable housing has been built in District 7 since 2013, and none are planned in the future. In a city suffering from extreme income inequality, gentrification, and homelessness, this is unacceptable.
With an urban planning background and extensive experience in affordable housing and community economic development, Myrna Melgar has a solid grasp of housing issues and is best positioned to be a progressive voice for District 7. She brings a fresh perspective and “outside the box” thinking about housing production and financing, such as co-op housing, employer-assisted housing, hybrid housing, and streamlining approvals for Accessible Dwelling Units.
Melgar also has a clear vision for safe, walkable, bikeable streets that are accessible to everyone. She identifies specific corridors in District 7 in need of traffic calming and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as specific improvements such as physical barriers, curb cuts, and bike lanes. She may be the first candidate we’ve heard include tricycles as a necessary component of bikeshare, recognizing the need to advance accessibility for those who cannot ride a bicycle.
Melgar was Deputy Director for the Mission Economic Development Agency. As Executive Director of the Jamestown Community Center, she introduced outdoor education and environmental stewardship and awareness to at-risk youth. She served on the San Francisco Planning Commission for four years, most recently as President. As a resident of District 7 for over a decade, she understands her community. Her experience will serve District 7 well.
