November 2022: Re-elect Supervisor Gordon Mar for District 4
/The District 4 Supervisors race will be close this year. Supervisor Mar has made a point of prioritizing environmental issues out in the Sunset, which is why he is our top candidate. Though he does not push to the front to try to grab headlines, he instead puts his head down to get the work done. This can be seen in his work on affordable housing, sponsoring a budget add-back to fund the Department of Environment, or even simply biking to work regularly. In the future, we look forward to how the Supervisor will champion programs to restore our urban canopy. This was one of the main areas in his questionnaire that spoke to the future of our city.
Yet, two important issues made this a difficult endorsement decision among SFLCV board members.
First, the Supervisor’s position on housing is a serious concern. With Governor Newsom launching a pilot to understand why the city has under-built and takes so long to permit new development, we hope that the Supervisor will evolve his position to allow for more major housing projects on the west side. To date, the Supervisor has repeatedly thwarted or weakened efforts to facilitate more environmentally beneficial transit-oriented multifamily housing.
Second, SFLCV differs from the Supervisor in his position on re-opening the Great Highway/Walkway, although we recognize the difficult position he is in due to his constituent’s strong feelings on this issue. Because no other candidate in the D4 race spoke about keeping the Great Highway/Walkway closed to cars this issue did not differentiate the field.
Ultimately, it is SFLCV’s assessment that Supervisor Mar is a champion of the environment. He aims to push forward ideas that make the City a better place and we are excited to support him in this race.
