November 2022: Vote for Rafael Mandelman for District 8 Supervisor
/In his four-year term as Supervisor for District 8, Rafael Mandelman has demonstrated strong leadership on many environmental issues in San Francisco, such as building decarbonization, Vision Zero, public transportation, waste reduction, and urban trees and green spaces. We at San Francisco League of Conservation Voters are excited to endorse him for another term.
On housing, Supervisor Mandelman has supported increasing housing density, a critical issue for making San Francisco more livable and reducing Bay Area driving and heating climate emissions. His legislation eliminating single-family zoning and allowing fourplexes throughout San Francisco (and six units on corner lots) was a step in the right direction, although his original legislation was much stronger before it was watered down with amendments, leading Mayor Breed to veto the measure. We would nonetheless like to see Supervisor Mandelman take even more aggressive action around housing density in order to help the City meet its ambitious and important targets for developing new housing. For example, we disagree with his vote against a 24% affordable housing development planned for an empty parking lot in District 6.
Supervisor Mandelman’s focus on climate change is moving San Francisco in the right direction. He created legislation to declare a state of climate emergency in San Francisco and led development of a plan for city departments to meet the City’s net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal by 2050. He authored an ordinance banning natural gas in new construction and requiring the use of electric alternatives. He has secured funds for the Department of the Environment; advocated for electric vehicle infrastructure; and written legislation to increase water reuse in new buildings.
Supervisor Mandelman has done good work on transit as well. He supported the Transportation Authority’s funding for pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, transit infrastructure investments, and paratransit operations. He supports the renewal of a half-cent sales tax for the Transportation Authority that funds investment in transportation systems in San Francisco. This will additionally provide local match dollars to secure federal funds for a downtown extension of Caltrain and high speed rail into San Francisco.
Finally, Supervisor Mandelman supports a critical effort to redirect the San Francisco Public Utilities District’s misguided stance against healthy water flows in the Tuolumne River. San Francisco should be leading on water conservation and water recycling rather than siding with big agriculture, and Mandelman has called on SFPUC to better represent the values of San Francisco residents.
In all these ways, SFLCV believes Rafael Mandelman has been an environmental champion for San Francisco. For District 8 Supervisor, vote Rafael Mandelman.
